The Association of Community Cancer Centers presented Michael O’Connell, MD, with its 2016 Clinical Research Award.

The award recognizes the significant positive impact O’Connell’s research has had on patients, their families and the community.

Michael O’Connell

O’Connell, who specializes in the treatment of gastrointestinal tract cancers, has helped lead several studies that resulted in improved treatment protocols for cancers of the rectum and colon. He is leading a study designed to assess the efficacy of a new anti-angiogenesis therapy combined with standard chemotherapy for patients who previously underwent surgery for stage II or stage III colon cancer.

O’Connell is associate chairman of the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project, and he also is a member of the NCI steering committee for gastrointestinal cancer cooperative group clinical trials.
