The role of screening in the prevention of colorectal cancer is an “important” issue that is increasingly being recognized among health care systems in the United States, according to Jimmy J. Hwang, MD, of the Levine Cancer Institute.

He discusses individual patient characteristics involved in deciding when screening for colorectal cancer should begin. A patient’s race and family history of the disease are particularly important to consider when determining this, according to Hwang, a HemOnc Today editorial board member.

“That’s certainly something that is important for everybody to be aware of – their overall family history – because that may influence the recommendations in regard to screening,” Hwang said.
