Joan Massagué, PhD, director of the Sloan Kettering Institute and Alfred P. Sloan chair at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, received the Pezcoller Foundation–American Association for Cancer Research International Award for Cancer Research.

The award recognizes scientists who have made major scientific discoveries in basic cancer research or made significant contributions to translational cancer research.

Massagué, who also is a professor at Weill-Cornell Graduate School of Medicine Sciences, was recognized for his discoveries in TGF-beta biology, considered fundamental to the understanding of cellular physiology. His work has led to greater understanding of developmental biology, homeostasis and cancer metastasis.

“In recognizing the work of my research group, it is reassuring that the Pezcoller Foundation and AACR Award selection committee continue to value basic research for its ability to reveal the basis of clinical problems,” Massagué said in a press release.

Massagué, an AACR member since 1990, previously served as associate professor of biochemistry at University of Massachusetts Medical School.
