VIDEO: Ongoing research explores use of aspirin, vitamin D in prevention, treatment of colon cancer
Aspirin, and, to a lesser extent, vitamin D, have both been shown to aid in the prevention of colon cancer, and vitamin D may also have a role in the treatment of the disease, according to Tanios Bekaii-Saab, MD, a professor of medicine and pharmacy at The Ohio State University College of Medicine.
Bekaii-Saab reviews the potential mechanisms behind the efficacy of aspirin, which has been noted most often among patients with a family history of colon cancer, and the need for more research.
“Aspirin does come with its own risks,” Bekaii-Saab said, pointing specifically to an increased likelihood of gastrointestinal bleeding. “But, given its other health benefits, I think you should consider it in high-risk patients.”
Vitamin D may have a place in the treatment of colon cancer, particularly among patients with more advanced disease, in addition to being an effective agent for prevention.
Currently, “a lot of activity” is focused on understanding the mechanisms behind colon cancer, as well as how to prevent the disease, according to Bekaii-Saab.
