Society of Surgical Oncology honors AACR executive

The Society of Surgical Oncology presented the James Ewing Layperson’s Award to Margaret Foti, PhD, MD (hc), CEO of the American Association for Cancer Research.

The society presents the award annually to a nonphysician in recognition for their work related to public awareness, patient resources or clinical research efforts in the prevention or cure of cancer.

“I am deeply honored to be recognized by the Society of Surgical Oncology with the James Ewing Layperson’s Award,” Foti said in a press release. “Dr. Ewing was a founder of both the AACR and the Society of Surgical Oncology, and it is really humbling for me to receive an award named in his honor.

“Many important advances have been made since Dr. Ewing founded these two prestigious organizations, but cancer is still the second leading cause of death among adults in the United States,” Foti added. “This sobering statistic reminds all of us that we urgently need to do more.”

AACR membership increased from about 3,000 to more than 35,000 during Foti’s tenure as CEO. In 2013, the association established an AACR task force devoted to surgical oncology. The 20-member panel strives to identify new ways to optimize opportunities for surgical oncology researchers and increase the visibility of surgical oncology research.
