Valerie W. Rusch, MD, FACS, has been elected chair of the board of regents of the American College of Surgeons.

Rusch is vice chair of clinical research in the department of surgery, Miner family chair in intrathoracic cancers and attending surgeon on the thoracic service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. She also is professor of surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College.

The American College of Surgeons’ board of regents formulates policy and is responsible for managing the affairs of the college.

As a thoracic surgeon, Rusch specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with cancers of the lung, airways, esophagus, mediastinum, chest wall and pleura. She was among the first women in the country to be board certified in thoracic surgery.

She has been a fellow of the American College of Surgeons since 1986 and has chaired four committees during that tenure.
