Former Yale Cancer Center director to lead MGH physicians group

Thomas J. Lynch Jr., MD, has been selected as the new CEO and chairman of the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization.

For the past 6 years, Lynch has served as director of Yale Cancer Center, physician-in-chief of Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven, and the Richard Sackler and Jonathan Sackler professor of medicine at Yale School of Medicine.

Lynch — a HemOnc Today Editorial Board member — is a Boston native. Prior to joining Yale, he served as chief of hematology-oncology at MGH Cancer Center and director of the Center for Thoracic Cancers. He also served as professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.

“The MGH is truly a special place,” Lynch said in a press release. “The talent, compassion and commitment of the medical staff are unmatched. Caring for the patient in the best way we know how is the core value of the hospital and has been since its founding in 1811. While change in health care is inevitable, I can think of no better place in the country to define excellence in patient care, education and research than the MGH.”

Lynch succeeds David F. Torchiana, MD, who stepped down in March to become CEO and president of Partners HealthCare.
