Dana-Farber/Boston Children's named best children's hospital for cancer

Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center has retained its distinction as the No. 1 children’s hospital for cancer in the country, according to U.S News & World Report.
Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s tops the publication’s list of best children’s hospital for cancer for 2015-16, released this morning. This is the second straight year the center has topped the list. It has ranked either first or second for five consecutive years.
“We are honored by this #1 ranking, which recognizes the exceptional care that comes from uniting a world-class cancer institute and a world-class pediatric hospital,” David A. Williams, MD, chief of hematology/oncology at Boston Children’s and associate chair of pediatric oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, said in a press release. “We specialize in both cancer and in children, and in both research into new treatments and the delivery of these new treatments to our patients.”
The ninth annual U.S News & World Report’s Best Children’s Hospital rankings are intended to help families of children with life-threatening or rare conditions obtain the best possible medical care.
The publication ranked medical centers overall, as well as in 10 pediatric specialties.
Boston Children’s Hospital finished first in the overall rankings as the country’s No. 1 pediatric hospital. It also ranked first in several specialty categories, including cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and GI surgery, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, and urology.
“In addition to being cared for by our excellent oncologists, children with cancer benefit from the expertise of other top-ranked specialties at Boston Children’s, from neurosurgeons operating on brain tumors to cardiologists monitoring the heart effects of the toxic treatments sometimes needed to cure cancer,” Lisa Diller, MD, chief medical officer of Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s, said in a press release. “These and other specialists, such as the pathologists and radiologists who ensure that we make the correct diagnosis, bring a truly multidisciplinary approach to our care of children with cancer.”
Other centers named to the top 10 for cancer care are: Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Texas Children’s Hospital, Seattle Children’s Hospital, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Children’s Hospital Colorado.
The rankings are based on clinical survey data from 184 pediatric centers, in addition to reputational survey information from pediatric specialists and subspecialists, according to a press release issued by U.S. News & World Report.
Several other factors — including clinical outcomes, compliance with best practices, and efficiency and coordination of care delivery — also are taken into account.
“There is nothing more overwhelming for parents than finding care for a child with a rare or life-threatening condition,” Avery Comarow, health rankings editor for U.S. News & World Report, said in the press release. “We hope the Best Children’s Hospitals provides a good starting point for research and helps make a family’s search for the best care for their child a little easier.”
