ASH announces faculty development program participants

ASH announced the participants in its 2015 American Society of Hematology-Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program.
Jacqueline C. Barrientos, MD, assistant professor of medicine at Hofstra North Shore–Long Island Jewish (LIJ) School of Medicine/The Feinstein Institute of Medical Research, will study Richter’s Syndrome. Johnnie J. Orozco, MD, PhD, research associate at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, will study the use of alpha radioimmunotherapy to improve haploidentical bone marrow transplantation.

The award is designed to increase the number of underrepresented minority scholars in the field of hematology with academic and research appointments. It is the result of a partnership between ASH and the Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Participants receive four years of support, including an annual stipend of up to $75,000 and an annual research grant of $30,000.
Barrientos and Orozco will spend at least 70% of their time on their ASH-AMFDP-funded research under the mentorship of senior faculty at their respective institutions.
“By supporting hematologists like Drs. Barrientos and Orozco through the ASH-AMFDP program, ASH aims to develop diverse leaders that will help move hematology forward,” ASH President David A. Williams, MD, of Boston Children’s Hospital said in a press release. “With the guidance of their experienced mentors and the support of this program, these scholars will be positioned to obtain prominent academic and research appointments and make valuable contributions to the field. ASH looks forward to seeing what they will accomplish.”
