Five medical students received ASH’s Physician–Scientist Career-Development Award.

The new award program is designed to help first-, second-, or third-year medical students in the United States and Canada gain critical early exposure to hematology research and learn more about the specialty.

The award recipients are Deborah Ahove of Yale Medical School, Saurav D. Haldar of Harvard Medical School, John L. Mariano of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, Itamar Niesvizky-Kogan of SUNY Upstate Medical University, and Emily A. Rosen of Harvard Medical School.

The honorees will receive $42,000 to cover supplies, educational expenses, health insurance, ASH annual meeting attendance and financial support while they pursue a yearlong laboratory, translational or clinical hematology research project alongside an ASH member mentor.

“While the process of becoming a successful physician–scientist is challenging, the journey is much less difficult with the right resources and people at your side,” said ASH President David A. Williams, MD, of Boston Children’s Hospital. “With financial support and the advice of their mentors, I have no doubt that ASH’s Physician–Scientist Career-Development Award recipients will be well-equipped to navigate the arduous, yet incredibly rewarding road to becoming a successful physician–scientist.”
