Hematology/medical oncology salaries varied by geographic region

Hematology/oncology specialists are necessary and valued in all parts of the country; however, some regions of the United States compensate their expertise more highly than others. According to a 2013 report issued by the American Medical Group Association, hematologists/medical oncologists in the southern region of the United States receive the highest median compensation.

Of the 13 states classified in the Southern region of the U.S. by the American Medical Group Association (AMGA) report, seven of these states — Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Tennessee — also fall into the region recently designated by the CDC as having the highest rate of potentially preventable deaths in the country. The same CDC report listed cancer as the second most common cause of preventable deaths.

Based on AMGA data, HemOnc Today has listed the compensation of physicians in the hematology/oncology profession by region of the country.

1. Southern Region

According to the 2013 AMGA report, hematologists/oncologists in the southern region of the U.S. receive a median compensation of $416,382. The southern region pertains to the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas,

2. Western Region

The Western region of the United States offers the second-highest median compensation for hematology/oncology specialists at $383,784, according to the AMGA report. This region of the U.S. includes Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

3. Northern Region

As of 2013, hematologists/medical oncologists earned a median compensation of $338,000 per year, according to the AMGA report. This region consists of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

4. Eastern Region

In the eastern region of the U.S., hematologists/medical oncologists receive a median compensation of $315,829, according to the 2013 AMGA report. States in this region include Connecticut, Delaware, D.C., Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia.
