Hematologists join cancer care alliance

Seattle Cancer Care Alliance recently hired two hematologists.

David A. Garcia, MD, who specializes in treating thrombosis and blood disorders, will serve as professor of hematology in the department of medicine/hematology and associate medical director for antithrombotic therapy at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He previously was professor of medicine and director of anticoagulation services at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

Stephen Douglas Smith, MD, a medical oncologist who specializes in the treatment of patients with lymphoma, will serve as associate professor in the division of medical oncology at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Smith previously served as an attending physician in hematologic malignancies inpatient services at Oregon Health and Science University Hospital, and he was an assistant professor at Oregon Health and Science University’s Knight Cancer Institute.

“We’re extremely fortunate to have both Dr. Garcia and Dr. Smith join our program,” Frederick R. Appelbaum, MD, executive director of the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, said in a press release. “Both physicians have a successful history treating patients with hematologic disorders and will be excellent resources for our patients.”
