Mayo Clinic in Arizona will open its own stem cell laboratory next summer.

The 6,200-square-foot lab — which will be located on Mayo Clinic’s Phoenix campus — will increase capacity, provide potential for research-related activities and also improve turnaround times for processing, Mayo Clinic officials said in a press release.

Initially, the lab will store and process stem cells used for bone marrow transplants at Mayo Clinic Hospital and Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

Mayo Clinic performs more than 200 adult stem cell transplants each year, as well as about 30 pediatric transplants in conjunction with Phoenix Children’s.
