Radiation oncologist receives award

Nicole Simone, MD, a radiation oncologist at Thomas Jefferson University and Hospital, received a Young Investigator Award from the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

Simone will use the $225,000 award to further her research in caloric restriction to decrease tumor growth and metastases in prostate cancer patients.

Results of studies conducted with animals have demonstrated caloric restriction can decrease multiple molecules in the insulin-like growth factor pathway. The combination of caloric restriction with radiation or chemotherapy leads to further decreases in this pathway.

“This is an incredibly exciting area in cancer research,” Adam Dicker, MD, PhD, chair of the department of radiation oncology at Thomas Jefferson University and Hospital, said in a press release. “Dr. Simone’s research connects nutrition, obesity and cancer. The opportunity to help patients through efforts that are under their control represents a fresh approach in the fight against cancer.”
