The American Thyroid Association honored Paul W. Ladenson, MD, with the 2012 Lewis E. Braverman Award.

The award recognizes members of the association who demonstrate excellence and passion for mentoring fellows, students and junior faculty, and who also have a long history of productive thyroid research.

Ladenson is the John Eager Howard Professor of Endocrinology, as well as professor of medicine, pathology, oncology, radiology and radiological science at Johns Hopkins University. He is director of the division of endocrinology and metabolism, and he also is past president of the American Thyroid Association (ATA).

His research interests include applications of thyroid hormone analogues for treatment of cardiovascular disease, novel approaches to thyroid cancer diagnosis and management, and health economic analyses related to thyroid patient care.

“While advancing his own body of research, Dr. Ladenson has become widely respected as one of endocrinology’s most thoughtful and trusted mentors,” James A. Fagin, MD, of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and president of the ATA, said in a press release. “Countless fellows and trainees have benefited from the opportunity to work directly with Dr. Ladenson over the years and have gone on to assume leadership positions in the field of endocrinology at various universities, research institutes, and within the ATA.”
