Steven K. Libutti, MD, has been selected to join a research team that will receive support from the 2012 Caring for Carcinoid Foundation — American Association for Cancer Research Grant for Carcinoid Tumor and Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumor Research.

The 2-year, $250,000 grant, created in partnership with the Caring for Carcinoid Foundation, will support research focused on developing innovative approaches related to carcinoid tumors or pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors.

The grant recipient — Renata Pasqualini, PhD, of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center — selected Libutti for the team.

Libutti is vice chairman of surgery and director of the Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care. He also is professor of surgery and genetics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University and the Marvin L. Gliedman, MD, Distinguished Surgeon at Montefiore.

“Dr. Libutti’s expertise in neuroendocrine tumors of the pancreas and his transgenic mouse models of this disease will be critical to the success of our project,” Pasqualini said in a press release.

The team also includes Wadih Arap, MD, PhD, Stringer Professor of Medicine and Experimental Diagnostic Imaging at MD Anderson. Pasqualini, Libutti and Arap are longtime collaborators on the research of targeted cancer therapies.
