Thomas S. Kupper, MD, received a 2011 Transformative Research Award from the NIH.

Kupper, director of the Cutaneous Cancer Treatment Center at Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center and chairman of dermatology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, was one of 17 recipients nationwide.

The awards are intended to support innovative research that has the potential to change conventional thinking in the scientific community and make a broad impact on medical science.

Kupper’s research focuses on immune system T cells that reside in the skin, lungs and gastrointestinal tract, where they help defend against infections and certain cancers.
