Kanti R. Rai, MB, BS, received the David A. Karnofsky Memorial Award and Lecture during the 2012 ASCO Annual Meeting.

The honor recognizes Rai’s achievements in cancer research, as well as his influence on the treatment of patients with cancer.

Rai serves as chief of the Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Research and Treatment Program at North Shore-Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Health System, and he is the Joel Finkelstein Cancer Foundation Professor of Medicine at Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine. He also is a HemOnc Today Editorial Board member.

He established the Rai clinical staging system for chronic lymphocytic leukemia. The system is based on an analysis of how abnormal lymphocytes affect the body. His research efforts have focused on the natural history of CLL and efforts to improve prognostic biomarkers.
