NEW ORLEANS – Creating the best possible environment for patient care is a top priority for oncology nurses. To create that environment, nurses are dealt the incredible task of keeping up to date with best practices as well as the ever growing healthcare environment.

The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) has taken steps in order to help nurses handle this task. ONS PEP (Putting Evidence into Practice) is a resource center that has aided in the identification of best practices and helps nurses engage in those practices on a daily basis.

The ONS PEP includes assessment and measurement tools, case studies and other resources for nurses. The resources are based on a three tier system that breaks down the recommendations and how ready they are to be put into practice (red, yellow, and green).

At the 37th ONS Congress held in New Orleans, LA over the weekend, the ONS PEP resource center was put to work as a didactic session with an extended question-and-answer session that explored how it can be used as a guide to enhance practice for the nurses in attendance.

Speakers Michele Gaguski, MSN, RN, CHPN, AOCN, Clinical Director Medical Oncology/Infusion Services at Atlanticare Cancer Care Institute, and Susan Bruce, RN, MSN, OCN, Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist at the Duke Raleigh Cancer Center shared their success in implementing best practices in symptom management at the institutional level with the more than 100 attendees on hand.

With the role advanced practice nurses play a role in engaging and motivating staff to participate in evidence based practice, the ONS PEP is a useful tool for all nurses to use in evolving their daily practice.
