Oncology news from around the web
A smattering of oncology related news for you (and non-oncology-related dancing animals):
- I was just discussing with my medical student mentoring group that some diabetes drugs can cause pancreatitis, when I came across this article suggesting that some type 2 diabetes meds (specifically sitagliptin) may be be associated with pancreatic cancer in rats. (hat tip to e! Science News).
- The FLEX trial, which is a phase-3 randomized trial of chemotherapy with or without cetuximab in non-small cell lung cancer, has been published. There is a one-month prolongation in OS with the addition of cetuximab.
- Some very interesting results in The New England Journal of Medicine this week: rosuvastatin is helpful in preventing deep venous thrombosis among healthy patients without cancer (HR=0.57). I'm wondering how long until they will do the trial in cancer patients?
- How does practicing at a teaching institution help us all learn to be better health care providers?
- Sometimes you come across a scientific article which makes you burn with envy — specifically the why-didn't-I-think-of-that? envy. Here is one such article. Scientists wanted to explore where only humans could really dance (a hypothesis driven by being e-mailed a video of a dancing parrot! See, all those forwards your mother sends you might actually be quite useful!). So, they combed Youtube and tested a parrot in the lab, changing up the beats per minute to try and throw him (named Snowball, natch) off. No such luck. If you need a smile, click on the video link showing Snowball dancing (and singing!) to the Backstreet Boys. I don't care for his choice in music, but I have to admit, the parrot's got moves.
