News around the web
More cool or interesting things on the web that you may want to check out:
- Farrah Fawcett is apparently very close to death from her anal cancer.
- The Institute of Medicine has issued a report on conflict of interest in medicine. I think these are likely to be the standards we will all be subjected to in the future.
- A newly discovered gene, DEAR1 or ductal epithelium-associated ring chromosome 1, was predictive of local breast cancer recurrence.
- I've been thinking more and more about the amount of radiation that patients in surveillance programs are receiving with all the scans we do. While this study is not very definitive, as it is a case-control study, it is interesting in that 1.9% of patients seen in an emergency room have multiple scans over many years, which appears to increase their risk for cancer.
- A medical student needs a bone marrow transplant and can't find a donor. A story of social media outreach as well as the incredible tenacity of this young (unfortunate) woman.
- Academic medical centers over-hype their findings in press releases?! Surely you must be joking! (Exaggeration was more common in animal studies than in human ones, by the way).
