Lots of interesting news about colorectal cancer to share with you today:
- Genomic Health Inc. has released preliminary positive results from their QUASAR study of the Oncotype DX colon cancer assay in predicting risk of recurrence for resected stage II colon cancer. These results are going to be presented at ASCO this summer. Unfortunately, they were not yet successful in using a separate Oncotype DX test to predict which patients would benefit most from 5-FU chemotherapy. As you probably know, this company already has an Oncotype DX test on the market for early-stage breast cancer. I wonder what the implication of this study will be on accrual to ECOG 5202 (discussed more in articleHemOnc Todaythis which also outlines the QUASAR study in more detail).
- This is kind of an older article (January 2009), so I'm not sure why it is getting press coverage now, but in any case: Hand-assisted laparoscopy for colectomy does not have increased complication rates (such as hernias or bowel obstructions) compared with standard laparoscopies.
- Depressing news: Only 51% of colorectal cancer patients had been screened in the prior 10 years, and in 83% of cases, the patients were diagnosed because they were having symptoms. Most patients said that they did not undergo screening because they did not know about the need for screening.
- OK, so this one has nothing to do with colon cancer, but I have to let you know about it. A man swallowed a pair of scissors! Cleaning his teeth!! And his X-rays made it online!!!
