Cancer in celebrity news

Lots of celebs with cancer lately. Let me catch you up on the latest (you know you were dying to hear about it).

  • Paul Allen was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. This, after he had Hodgkin's lymphoma 25 years ago. Secondary malignancies after treatment for Hodgkin's are not all that uncommon — there is even a Cochrane review dedicated to the topic. Unlike some solid tumors after treatment for Hodgkin's, which have worse prognoses, the prognosis for secondary NHL is still reasonable.
  • Speaking of Hodgkin's disease, Ethan Zohn is reported to have refractory Hodgkin's disease. (Mr. Zohn is a prior winner of the reality show "Survivor"). He is now on second-line chemotherapy and preparing to undergo a stem cell transplant. He is documenting much of his journey with cancer and chemotherapy with People magazine, including his stem cell harvest.
  • Basketball superstar Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has Philadelphia chromosome positive chronic myeloid leukemia, and his medical student son is helping to inform him about his treatments and prognosis.
  • "Easy Rider" actor Dennis Hopper has prostate cancer (he revealed he has had prostate cancer for nine years but is just now publically discussing it) and appears to be on a clinical trial at the University of Southern California. It's a positive thing to see celebs going on clinical trials!
