CHICAGO — A novel plant-based serum improved signs of photoaging among subjects, according to a video oral abstract from the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Annual Meeting.

“A novel serum comprised of expert plant-based adaptogens, and we’re calling it the Plant Adaptogens Targeting Homeostasis [PATH] technology, was developed to support skin’s natural ability to adapt and achieve balance and improve skin quality and aging,” Pearl E. Grimes, MD, FAAD, director of the Vitiligo and Pigmentation Institute of Southern California and clinical professor of dermatology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, said in the video oral abstract.

Grimes presented findings from an open-label study that evaluated the efficacy and subject satisfaction of this novel serum, which Grimes called MYS, on mildly to severely photoaged skin.

Of the 53 study subjects, 81% exhibited moderate photodamage, whereas 11% had mild and 8% had moderate/severe photodamage.

Each subject applied MYS serum twice daily over 12 weeks in addition to using a gentle cleanser and moisturizer twice a day and a daily sunscreen.

After 2 weeks of treatment, researchers observed a 13% mean improvement from baseline according to the Global Skin Quality Index, which takes into account signs of erythema, dullness, texture, pore size and uneven pigmentation (P < .0001). By 12 weeks, improvement increased to 39% (P < .0001).

Nearly all patients (98%) reported that their pores were less visible after 8 weeks and their skin felt less oily or greasy after 12 weeks.

“We observed significant improvements in features of photoaging beginning at 2 weeks with significant improvement noted at each time point,” Grimes concluded.
