NEW YORK — In this Healio video exclusive, Andrew F. Alexis, MD, MPH, cofounder and cochair of the Skin of Color Update 2023 meeting, highlights the importance, progress and future of dermatological care for patients with skin of color.

“The Skin of Color Update is a unique meeting in that we take a deep dive into multiple areas that are of critical importance to patients with skin of color and how best to manage them,” Alexis said.

He adds that the meeting is run by some of the best speakers in dermatology who discuss everything from medical to aesthetic disorders that affect patients with skin of color and how to approach them.

“We know that there are many disparities that exist with respect to numerous areas in health care, including dermatology ... for our patients with skin of color,” Alexis said. “And while so much more work needs to be done, I am pleased to see the progress that has been made in the past few years in particular.”

Alexis cites numerous conditions that require more research, understanding and advances for this patient population including inflammatory, neoplastic, pigmentary, and hair and scalp disorders. But according to Alexis, the future is very bright.

“I am very optimistic that this will occur in the very near future,” he said. “With more research, more education, more awareness, we are going to see advances in therapy so we can take better care of our patients and bring better outcomes.”
