WAILEA, Hawaii — Treating macular dermal hyperpigmentation conditions requires a multi-pronged approach, according to a speaker here.

In this Healio video exclusive, Pearl E. Grimes, MD, director of the Vitiligo and Pigmentation Institute of Southern California and clinical professor of dermatology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, summarizes the presentation she gave regarding hyperpigmentation disorders at the Maui Derm meeting.

In addition to melasma and hyperpigmentation, she discusses macular, dermal hyperpigmentations, which include photo contact dermatitis, erythema dyschromicum perstans and lichen planus pigmentosus.

“The take-home message has to be multimodality,” Grimes said. “These conditions are phenomenally difficult to treat.”
