A retinoid/alpha hydroxy acid cream formulation with salicylic acid improved mild to moderate blemishes in adults, according to a poster presented at South Beach Symposium Medical Dermatology Summit.

Deanne M. Robinson, MD, FAAD, and colleagues wrote in the poster that formulations containing retinoid/alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) and glycolic acid “led to early, progressive improvements in the appearance of photodamaged skin with significant improvements in skin hydration” in previous studies and that retinoid/AHA “was more tolerable than 1.0% retinol and 0.025% tretinoin creams at 12 weeks.”

The dual-center, open-label study enrolled adults aged 25 to 45 years with mild to moderate blemish-prone skin. The 19 participants (average age, 32 years) who completed the study followed a skin care routine incorporating a cleanser, moisturizer and SPF 56. Researchers assessed participants’ Investigator’s Global Assessment Scale scores as well as pores, skin tone, and fine lines and wrinkles at baseline and weeks 4, 8 and 12. The study’s outcomes of interest included skin clarity, pores and skin tone.

The data showed improvement from baseline, and patients reported high levels of satisfaction. At week 12, patients had 50% improvement in skin clarity (P < .0001), 25% improvement in pores (P = .0006) and 16% improvement in skin tone (P = .09). Each participant reported that their “skin appeared more even-looking and less red” at week 12, the researchers wrote.

The formulation was well tolerated, according to the researchers. Adverse events “were localized, mild and transient” and did not cause any of the participants to discontinue the study.

“A double-conjugated retinoid/AHA cream containing salicylic acid demonstrated significant and early visible improvements in skin clarity and pores over 12 weeks,” the researchers wrote.
