In this Healio video exclusive, J. Dawn Abbott, MD, FSCAI, and James B. Hermiller, MD, MSCAI, discuss the impactful research and highlights from the 2024 Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions Scientific Sessions.
Abbott, who is professor of medicine, associate chief of faculty development and academic advancement in the division of cardiology and director of interventional cardiology at the Lifespan Cardiovascular Institute in Providence, Rhode Island, and program chair of the SCAI Scientific Session, discussed the results of the CALORI and AI-ENCODE studies.
As Healio previously reported, the results of the CALORI study called into question the routine practice of fasting prior to cardiac catheterization.
In addition, the AI-ENCODE study evaluated the efficacy of artificial intelligence to evaluate several cardiac measures from just one or two angiograms that would otherwise require further imaging tests.
Hermiller, who is the SCAI president, director of the interventional cardiology fellowship and structural heart program at St. Vincent Ascension Heart Center and assistant consulting professor of medicine at Duke University, discuss his personal focus on physician wellness, particularly for interventional cardiologists.
“As a group, we interventional cardiologists are not well today ... It’s time to protect ourselves and protect our staff,” Hermiller said. “Over the next year, there are going to be a number of programs and other learnings for everybody.”
