PHILADELPHIA — In this Healio video exclusive, Leslie Cho, MD, discusses how to assess CV risk when considering use of hormone therapy for bothersome menopausal symptoms.
Approximately 6,000 women transition into menopause each day in the U.S. and many do not have their CVD risk assessed when discussing options such as menopausal HT, Cho, director of the Cleveland Clinic’s Women’s Cardiovascular Center, said at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions.
“For most women, they are safe to take hormone replacement therapy,” Cho said. “But for women at intermediate risk — women with hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol and family history [of CVD] — it is really important to pause and assess their risk.”
Additionally, women with a history of MI, stroke or venous thromboembolism should not be prescribed menopausal HT for bothersome vasomotor symptoms, Cho said.
“Shared decision-making is important ... about how to treat these vasomotor symptoms,” Cho said.
