VIDEO: Supervised exercise training beneficial in patients with PAD

Fact checked byErik Swain

Key takeaways:

  • Supervised exercise training improves symptoms and quality of life in patients with peripheral artery disease.
  • Despite proven benefits, use of supervised exercise training in the PAD population is low.

ARLINGTON, Texas — In this Healio video exclusive, Ambarish Pandey, MD, discusses a presentation on supervised exercise training for patients with peripheral artery disease.

The presentation by Pandey, assistant professor of internal medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center, at the American Society for Preventive Cardiology Congress on CVD Prevention delved into how supervised exercise training benefits patients with PAD, and how to get more clinicians involved in using it.

“Supervised exercise training has been shown in multiple randomized controlled trials to significantly improve patients’ walk distance, symptom burden and quality of life,” Pandey said. “However, the uptake of supervised exercise in patients with [PAD] is pretty low, with less than 5% of our patients with PAD being referred.”
