Men with vital exhaustion who were divorced, widowed or never married were more likely than married men to have an MI, according to research presented at the European Society of Cardiology’s virtual Acute Cardiovascular Care Congress.

“Our findings showed men who are living alone (especially divorced and widowed) with vital exhaustion had ... higher risk of myocardial infarction compared to married ones. Unmarried standing is associated with lack of support from a spouse when faced with the problems of everyday life. In addition, marital standing is a way of social support increasing and building the social network, which is a protective cardiovascular factor,” Dmitriy Panov, MD, of the Institute of Cytology and Genetics in Novosibirsk, Russia, told Healio.

In an analysis of men aged 25 to 64 years from five different cohorts, 67% had vital exhaustion (15% had a high level and 52% had a moderate level).

Men with an elementary school education had a 2.2-fold higher risk for MI compared with those with a university degree, the researchers reported.

Compared with those without vital exhaustion, men with moderate or high levels had a 2.7-fold greater risk for MI within 5 years, a 2.25-fold higher risk within 10 years and a 2.1-fold increased risk within 14 years (P for all < .05), according to the researchers.

When researchers adjusted for social factors and age, the influence of vital exhaustion on MI risk declined but remained statistically significant.

According to the researchers, social and economic crisis was a factor in higher incidence of vital exhaustion.

“Efforts to improve well-being and reduce stress at home and at work can help reduce vital exhaustion. Involvement in community groups is one way to increase social support and become less vulnerable to stress. Together with a healthy lifestyle, these measures should be beneficial for heart health,” Panov said in a press release.

Specifically, Panov told Healio, “There are several ways to improve mental health well-being. No. 1, healthy lifestyle, especially the increase in regular physical activity and having active leisure time and elimination of sleep disturbances. No. 2, an increasing of social support and involving in social networks as participating in social activities and maintaining of relations with friends and relatives. There are some measures for governmental and business level: the working conditions and hygiene; and providing the access to appropriate medical care and adequate health care utilization.”
