Self-expanding venous stent receives FDA approval
Cook Medical announced its self-expanding venous stent received FDA premarket approval and is expected to be commercially available in the U.S. in the fourth quarter of 2020.
This self-expanding stent (Zilver Vena, Cook Medical) is approved to treat patients with iliofemoral venous disease, a condition known to lead to quality of life problems such as leg pain, swelling and blood clots, according to a press release issued by the company.

When implanted, the self-expanding stent keeps blood flowing through narrow or blocked veins, according to the release.
“We are only in the early stages of understanding this complex disease, but Cook is committed to driving venous therapy development,” Mark Breedlove, vice president of Cook Medical’s Vascular division, said in the release. “We are engaged and committed to working alongside physicians and investing in thorough internal training, physician education, building clinical evidence and more.”
According to the release, physician training sessions for the use of the self-expanding stent will be made available soon.
