CHICAGO — In this video exclusive, JoAnn E. Manson, MD, DrPH, FAHA, highlights results of the large-scale VITAL trial, which analyzed omega-3 and vitamin D supplementation for primary prevention of CVD and cancer.

While supplementation did not result in a lower incidence of major CV events or cancer compared with placebo over 5 years of follow-up, several findings of note emerged in secondary and subgroup analyses, according to Manson, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and chief of the division of preventive medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Manson also discusses clinical implications of the VITAL data and further analyses that are underway, including supplementation for cognitive function, diabetes and autoimmune diseases.
