Cleveland Clinic ranked top US hospital for cardiology, heart surgery

Cleveland Clinic has been named the No. 1 hospital in the country for cardiology and heart surgery by the U.S. News & World Report 2018-2019 Best Hospitals rankings.
“We are absolutely thrilled that the Cleveland Clinic Heart and Vascular Institute received the No. 1 ranking from U.S. News for the 24th consecutive year,” Steven E. Nissen, MD, MACC, chairman of the Robert and Suzanne Tomsich Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic’s Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart and Vascular Institute and a Cardiology Today Editorial Board Member, said in an interview. “This honor is a tribute to the hard work of an extraordinary multidisciplinary team that provides cardiovascular care to our patients, including physicians, nurses, ancillary medical personnel and other caregivers.”
The top-ranked hospitals for cardiology and heart surgery in the 2018-2019 report are:
- Cleveland Clinic
- Mayo Clinic
- Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai
- New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia and Cornell
- Massachusetts General Hospital
- Hospitals of the University of Pennsylvania-Penn Presbyterian
- Northwestern Memorial Hospital
- Brigham and Women’s Hospital
- University of Michigan Hospitals-Michigan Medicine
- Mount Sinai Hospital
The 2018-2019 rankings compared more than 4,500 national medical centers across 25 specialties, conditions and procedures, with 158 hospitals receiving national rankings in at least one specialty and more than 1,100 hospitals considered as high performing in at least one common condition or procedure.
“For nearly 3 decades, U.S. News has strived to make hospital quality more transparent to health care consumers nationwide,” Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News, said in the press release. “By providing the most comprehensive data available on nearly every hospital across the United States, we give patients, families and physicians information to support their search for the best care across a range of procedures, conditions and specialties.”
New to this year’s ranking methodologies include integration of ICD-10, removal of inpatient transfers when calculating the risk-adjusted mortality rate and the conversion of risk-adjusted mortality rates to survival scores.
The Mayo Clinic is No. 1 on the Best Hospitals Honor Roll for the third consecutive year, with Cleveland Clinic and Johns Hopkins Hospital in the second and third positions, respectively.
“For all these years, we have been well-served by the truly collaborative roles played by every member of the team that always places the patient at the center of our efforts,” Nissen told Cardiology Today. “In the coming year, we will work even harder to continue to earn the trust of our patients.”
