Avinger announced that the newest generation of its catheter to diagnose and treat patients with peripheral artery disease has been cleared for marketing by the FDA.

The image-guided atherectomy device (Pantheris, Avinger) has the potential to impact up to 21 million people in the U.S., according to a press release from the company.

The device merges real-time intervascular imagery with catheters with a built-in camera allows doctors to see inside arteries and remove plaque without blood vessel damage during atherectomy procedures.

This device can also be used to identify fibroatheromas, necrotic cores, stent struts and calcium within blood vessels, according to the release.

Technology within the catheter (Lumivascular Platform, Avinger) aids doctors through OCT when treating PAD lesions, the company stated in the release.

The company plans on starting pilot programs for this device, according to the release.
