Ultra-high resolution CT system receives FDA clearance

Canon Medical Systems USA, Inc. announced the FDA cleared for marketing its ultra-high resolution CT system.
The system (Aquilion Precision) can resolve anatomy as small as 150 microns and is designed to provide a level of resolution typically seen only in cath labs and not previously seen in CT system, the company stated in a press release.
According to the release, the CT system may make it possible to help expand visualization of disease using a new detector as well as tube, gantry and reconstruction technologies that improve image detail.
Additionally, the CT system has detector channels that are only 0.25 mm thick, which, when combined with improvements in scintillator quantum efficiency, detector circuitry and other data acquisition system components, results in a dose-efficient detector with ultra-high-resolution capabilities, according to the release.
“The increased amount of information delivered by the Aquilion Precision opens new doors for health care providers,” Dominic Smith, senior director, CT, PET/CT, and MR Business Units, Canon Medical Systems USA said in the release. “The system delivers higher resolution images than other systems on the market, enabling customers to deliver better patient care.”
