CHICAGO — Amit Alam, MD, of Northwell Health in Great Neck, NY, provides investigator perspective on the promise of pulmonary artery pressure monitoring in the management of patients with HF at the annual ACC Scientific Session.

After offering brief background on the CHAMPION trial, in which patients underwent catheter-based implantation of a microelectromechanical systems pressure sensor (CardioMEMS, St. Jude Medical), he highlights data from the current research involving the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire, assessing symptoms including fatigue, HF, chest pain, shortness of breath and leg-swelling.

“Patients who had this questionnaire with the device, their scores improved … and a higher score represents a better health status,” Alam said. “This device actually works, it does lead to decreased HF hospitalizations, and in addition, it does get patients to feel better about themselves, and that makes us feel better about ourselves.”
