SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – In this video, Debra Moser, PhD, RN, FAHA, FAAN, of the University of Kentucky College of Nursing, discusses her presentation about the role of a low-sodium diet in patients with HF.

According to Moser, this is a “controversial area,” because the evidence supporting a low-sodium diet in these patients is mixed. The varying levels of evidence have also led to fewer guidelines on such diets from professional societies, because the organizations “really don’t make a recommendation at all” due of concerns about inconsistent support.

Moser reviews the “best recommendation” available for low-sodium diets in patients with HF and compares this with the sodium intake suggested for individuals without HF.

“Ultimately, we need to consider that all Americans – patients with HF and the general population – have an average intake of 4 grams of sodium per day. We all need to work a bit to decrease sodium intake,” she said.
