VIDEO: SILVER-AMI investigation raises questions about gender, STEMI subtypes in geriatric cardiology
John Dodson, MD, MPH, of NYU Langone Medical Center, provides insight on an investigation stemming from the ongoing NHLBI-sponsored SILVER-AMI study, analyzing in-hospital presentations and 6-month outcomes in older patients with acute MI.
He outlines the gender differences evaluated in the current research, describing the variances observed in presentation characteristics such as cognition, ambulation and upper extremity strength, as well as treatment strategies including amount of medication administered and frequency of coronary angiography.
Dodson details specific findings within the STEMI and non-STEMI subgroups and highlights new questions raised.
“This is an interesting foray into geriatric cardiology and the prevalence of geriatric impairments in practice,” he said. “In the future, we’re also going to look at things like in-hospital complications and 6-month outcomes.”
