ORLANDO, Fla. — Mohan Kottapally, MD, associate professor of clinical neurology and neurocritical care at the University of Miami, offers insight at AHA 2015 on the recently updated recommendations for the use of thrombectomy in patients with acute ischemic stroke.

“This past year has been remarkable in the world of stroke and intervention, and it’s finally galvanized our entire field toward following the world of interventional cardiology,” he said, noting motion toward options outside of IV tissue plasminogen activator.

Kottapolly discusses the similarities in the medical management of patients after thrombectomy and fibrinolytic therapy, as well as the distinct complications, highlighting techniques including BP targets and considerations such as anticoagulation.

He said he hopes the field will ask questions and conduct research “to pursue further the way to not only optimally manage this disease after … aggressive brain-saving and life-saving therapies, but also the optimal ways to prevent further deterioration.”
