VIDEO: Bleeding rates ‘higher than expected’ with warfarin in veterans with AF
ORLANDO, Fla. — John Dodson, MD, MPH, cardiologist and assistant professor of medicine and population health at NYU Langone Medical Center, offers investigator insight at the annual AHA Scientific Sessions on high bleeding rates discovered among U.S. veterans assigned warfarin for atrial fibrillation.
“Warfarin has been historically underutilized in older patients,” he said.
In context of clinicians’ reluctance to prescribe warfarin in this population, Dodson reviews the trial design, details a “major finding” on hospitalizations for bleeding and discusses the common causes observed.
Dodson touches on the next step in research, looking at factors that independently predict bleeding.
“These hospitalizations can obviously have major consequences for patients,” he said. “We’d really like to get to a point where we can help clinicians with decision-making based on individual risk profile.”
