Overall, 2015 was an exciting year for the interventional community. There were several exciting developments in the field. In this issue, the Top 5 Trends for 2016 captures the Cardiology Today’s Intervention Editorial Board’s thoughts on the hottest topics to watch for in the coming year. These trends represent the growing boundaries of intervention, including treatment outside the heart. The specific topics mentioned are of great clinical importance, and many will be further developed by results of ongoing and planned trials.

On this year’s list, interventionalists have been eagerly anticipating data on bioabsorbable stents, and the first large datasets are now coming out with eager anticipation of longer-term follow-up in the hope that benefits emerge. Excitement surrounding transcatheter aortic valve replacement continues to grow, and the study and availability of newer generations of existing TAVR valves as well as new TAVR valves hold great promise. The application of endovascular techniques for treatment of acute ischemic stroke is revolutionizing that area of medicine. The approval of left atrial appendage occlusion devices allows another approach to stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation. The issue of optimal duration and intensity of dual antiplatelet therapy continues to challenge interventionalists.

Not included on the Top 5 Trends list, but equally important, are developments in lower-extremity intervention, such as drug-coated balloons and other novel technologies. In 2016, we look forward to covering the latest and greatest developments in cardiac and vascular intervention. This is an area of intense interest among a variety of practitioners.

We here at Cardiology Today’s Intervention will keep you posted as knowledge in these areas grows. Contact the editors at cardiology@healio.com to let us know your thoughts on the top trends in the coming year.
