Medtronic announced that 4-year results of the ENGAGE registry indicate its abdominal aortic aneurysm stent graft is associated with continued positive outcomes, even in challenging subgroups.
Hence J.M. Verhagen, MD, PhD, presented 4-year results of the abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) stent graft (Endurant, Medtronic) in patients with challenging anatomy at the VEITHsymposium in New York.

“Analysis of the patient cohort from the 4-year global ENGAGE registry included several anatomically challenging subgroups: short, highly angulated and calcium/thrombus-burdened AAA necks,” Verhagen, professor and chief of vascular surgery at Erasmus University Medical Center, Rotterdam, the Netherlands, said in a Medtronic press release. “These mid-term results offer clinical insight into the treatment of AAA neck anatomies relevant and applicable to current clinical practice and real-world settings.”
At 4 years, there were no significant differences in rate of type 1A endoleak and AAA diameter increase between patients with a short AAA neck (≥ 10 mm to < 15 mm) and those with a standard neck (≥ 15 mm), according to the release.
Both groups also had low and similar rates of aneurysm rupture and conversion to open surgery, and similar rates of secondary endovascular procedures.
Verhagen and colleagues reported that freedom from aneurysm-related mortality at 4 years was 99.2% for those with short necks and 98.3% for those with standard necks.
The Endurant system is approved in the United States for use in patients with AAA neck lengths at least 10 mm and infra-renal angulation up to 60°. It is approved outside of the United States for use in patients with AAA neck lengths at least 10 mm and infra-renal angulation up to 60° and in those with AAA neck lengths at least 15 mm and infra-renal angulation up to 75°.
The ENGAGE registry began in 2008 and has enrolled more than 1,200 patients at 79 sites around the world, according to the release. – by Erik Swain
