The Department of Veterans Affairs and the American Heart Association announced an agreement to collaboratively raise awareness of CVD and stroke among female veterans and the wives of veterans and military members.

Using the AHA’s “Go Red for Women” campaign, which utilizes online resources and databases to increase CVD awareness, the combined efforts of the VA will extend these resources to female veterans.

“This is an important issue for women veterans, and we need to do everything we can to address it,” Erik K. Shinseki, secretary of VA, said in a press release.

Women are now the fastest growing cohort within the veteran community. In 2011, about 1.8 million (8%) of the 22.2 million veterans were women. The number of female veterans will increase to 2 million in 2020, at which time women will make up 10.7% of the total veteran population, according to the release.
