The American Society of Hypertension and the Mississippi State Department of Health have collaborated to create the Mississippi Hypertension Specialist Initiative.

The population-based quality improvement initiative is geared toward improving CV health outcomes of Mississippi residents. The goals of the initiative include increasing physicians’ knowledge and skills in managing complex treatment-resistant hypertension; raising the number of designated hypertension specialists in Mississippi; increasing the utilization of ASH’s Hypertension Registry in Mississippi; and improving clinical outcomes in patients with hypertension, according to a press release.

“Mississippi ranks second in the nation in percent of adults who have been diagnosed with hypertension,” Mary Currier, MD, Mississippi State Health Officer, said in the release. “It’s important we fight back. Further training and educating our physicians is a great place to start.”
