An Amplatzer occluder has been found feasible, safe and effective for the closure of medium- and small-sized patent ductus arteriosus in children and symptomatic infants.

In the multicenter, retrospective study, researchers analyzed data on 60 children who underwent patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) closure with a vascular plug (Amplatzer Duct Occluder II Additional Sizes [ADO II AS], AGA Medical) at four cardiology centers between March 2011 and October 2012. More than two-thirds of the children (n= 41; 68.3%) were girls.

The ADO II AS was successfully used for closure in 96.6% of patients (n=58). The device was not released in the other two infants due to significant residual shunt. The median age of the children was 6.5 months and median weight was 6.8 kg.

At follow-up (median, 12 months), no death or major complication occurred for any of the 58 children in which complete closure with the ADO II AS was observed.

“The results of the present multicenter study have demonstrated that implantation of ADO II AS was feasible for all types of PDA with a diameter less than or equal to 4 mm and for wide variety sizes of children and even for small infants,” the researchers wrote. “The use of the device will expand field of application of PDA closure, especially in small infants and expremature babies.”
