The American College of Cardiology has launched a free app designed to aid clinicians in the management and treatment of patients who report adverse muscular symptoms while on statin therapy, according to a press release.
Using the Statin Intolerance App, clinicians can respond to a series of questions that assess a patient’s tolerance to their current statin prescription. Then, clinicians can follow recommended cycles of discontinuation and rechallenge to identify the most appropriate statin and dose for a patient or to determine whether a patient is statin intolerant. The app also compares statin characteristics and drug interactions to assist clinicians in selecting a primary cholesterol-lowering therapy.
The content for the app was drawn from the ACC/AHA’s 2013 Guideline on the Treatment of Blood Cholesterol to Reduce Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Risk in Adults and prescribing data from each statin, according to the release. The app was developed as part of the ACC’s LDL: Address the Risk Initiative program, which is designed to increase awareness of cholesterol management and the risks associated with high LDL.
The free app is available in web and mobile versions, at http://tools.acc.org/statinintolerance or in the iTunes or Google Play app stores.
