CMS returns one-third of Open Payments data due to errors

In an effort to ensure accurate information is included in their Open Payments database, CMS announced it has returned approximately one-third of records submitted to manufacturers and group purchasing organizations due to intermingled and erroneous data.
In email correspondence, a CMS representative told Healio.com that, after detecting such errors as incorrect payment records caused by a mix-up of national provider identifiers, CMS closed the reporting system.
New algorithms and methods of validation have been implemented, and according to the spokesperson, the “enhanced matching process flagged current records within the system that were inaccurate.” To remedy the problem, flagged records must be corrected and resubmitted by the manufacturers’ applicable group purchasing organizations (GPOs). These records will not be part of the current review and dispute period, and so will not be made public on Sept. 30.
In the correspondence, CMS said that “more information would be forthcoming,” and the data will be released during the next reporting cycle in June 2015.
