As the new editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Valentin Fuster, MD, PhD, MACC, spoke with Cardiology Today about his role and the future of media.

Bringing the voices of young physicians — and young cardiologists, specifically — to the forefront is important to Fuster. “We want to be able to give an opportunity for young people to express their views. I think we learn from young people,” he said in an interview.

The first issue of JACC under the guidance of Fuster was published in early July. Among several other changes, Fuster told Cardiology Today that each issue of the journal will have a dedicated section written by fellows or a new physician.

In addition, audio is an important component for physicians and other readers to obtain information, according to Fuster. “In our society, at the moment, we either read quickly or we don’t read at all. If someone wants to listen and not read, we have that opportunity,” he said. Each JACC issue will be accompanied by an audio recording to describe the main points within.

Fuster said he believes that the nature of media is changing, but that the public could be better informed. He remains optimistic about the future of media and information provided to physicians.

“I hope we see media move into concepts that are more well thought out and take a conceptual approach. I see more emphasis on this approach, and media moving more toward education,” he said. “It’s still not enough, but it’s something I see favorably. People are more educated and capable of discriminating.”

Fuster will serve a 5-year term as the JACC editor in chief. He replaces Anthony DeMaria, MD, MACC, who served as the editor in chief since 2002.
