Darren K. McGuire, MD, MHSc, on the 3-year STAMPEDE trial results
WASHINGTON — In this video, Darren K. McGuire, MD, MHSc, professor of internal medicine and Dallas Heart Ball Chair for research on heart disease in women at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, discussed 3-year data from the STAMPEDE trial, presented at the American College of Cardiology Scientific Sessions.
The trial included 150 obese patients with diabetes randomly assigned intensive medical therapy alone, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass with medical therapy or sleeve gastrectomy with medical therapy. HbA1c ≤6% was the primary endpoint of the study, and was achieved by significantly more patients in the gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy groups.
McGuire said that these results add to mounting evidence suggesting the importance of mechanical interventions for the reduction of obesity, but noted that the trial was not sufficiently powered to assess clinical outcomes. The long-term clinical impact on macrovascular and microvascular disease complications, he concluded, remain to be determined.
